Kovalev won. As a matter of fact, I was at the IBHOF with dozens of luminaries there and Smitty posed the question and almost everybody said Kovalev. Also, I worked with a guy that grew up with Ward and was watching the fight with a bunch of Ward’s family and as soon as the fight was over, he said they were all like, “damn, Andre lost”! Crooked decision. As far as the rematch goes, think of the pressure on Kovalev having just been robbed of his marquee/career night and knowing you have to regroup, come back and fight a super talented fighter and absolutely have to knock him out to win. Even at that, he was ahead in the fight when Ward lined up a grand stand right hand that didn’t even knock him out, and corrupt Weeks made one of the oddest/premature stoppages in boxing history.
